altThe Guangzhou Auto Show in south China is open for business. Major global and local car makers have gathered in the metropolis for the last time this year to show their commitment to the world's No.1 auto market.

Many of them have found their market shares in China have changed dramatically because of the fall of Japanese brands, due to the Diaoyu Islands disputes between China and Japan.

Data from the China Auto Industry Association shows that Japanese brands' car sales suffered a 60 percent annual slump to 100 thousand units in October from a year ago. That means their market share nosedived from 20 percent to only 7.6 percent in just two months.

In the meantime, German, U.S. and South Korean brands have all seen their market share rise significantly in the past two months, to 21 percent, 12 percent and 10 percent respectively. Chinese domestic brands enjoyed the biggest market share of 45 percent in October, the highest level this year. But executives of Chinese car makers at the Guangzhou Auto Show have made it clear that only quality and reputation can sustain growth, as opposed to specific incidents.

An Jin, Chairman, JAC Motors, said, "No matter how fast Chinese domestic car brands have grown in recent years, we are still relatively small compared to global brands. So it's not yet time to talk about competition with them. But we have our advantages. We know Chinese consumers better, and are better placed to develop products tailored to their needs. And we can find marketplaces in other emerging economies. If we can win in those specific market segments, our success will transform into scale and recognition. "
